Rector’s Annual Report for 2011

This year, having completed the whole year as Priest-in-Charge of the By Brook Benefice, it feels slightly more appropriate to be writing the Rector’s Annual Report for 2011. This report gives us a chance to look back at 2011 to see all that has happened in and across the benefice, to consider the effect that has had on each of the individual parishes, and also to share some of the plans that lie ahead in order to be encouraged that the future for this benefice looks good as long as we continue to grow and work together.

Whenever a new priest is appointed to a parish or benefice, there is going to be some change. This is inevitable because we are all different, and have different approaches to ministry. I hope that you can see that any changes that I have made here have been very carefully thought through and prayed about before being proposed and put into action. I do not believe in change for the sake of it, and I would like to thank you for working with me as we have made changes, and for learning with me when things have worked or when they haven’t quite worked as we might have hoped.

This May, 2 important flames will be passing through the area. The most well known, on Wednesday 23rd May is the Olympic torch passing on its way to London for the Olympics which so many have been looking forward to. The second which is less well known is the Flame of Hope, which will be leaving Lacock on Saturday 12th May to move throughout the Chippenham Deanery, passing through the By Brook Benefice, Marshfield, Colerne, Box and so many other villages in the area.

The Flame of Hope is part of a 2 week festival of faith taking place this May to celebrate the Christian faith, and the life of the many wonderful rural churches that we have here. There are a number of different events taking place, please click here for details. This is an opportunity for us all, whether we normally attend church or not to come along and give thanks that our churches are still here for us in the highs and lows of life. Why not come along? We would love to welcome you.

Rev Jonathan Philpott

Blooming Marvellous - 17th June

Back by popular demand – West Kington hosts its Open Garden Afternoon on Sunday 17 June 2012.

West Kington has a reputation in Wiltshire for some fabulous private gardens. And with good reason since four garden designers live in the village alongside two landscape gardeners, a specialist topiary nursery, a wholesale plant nursery and a bevy of keen flower and veg. enthusiasts.

Now you can get inspiration, and marvel at all their hard work as many of West Kington’s finest gardens throw open their gates to visitors on Sunday, 17 June from 1.30 – 5.30pm. Tickets £5 per person with children under 16 welcomed free.

Designed as a fund-raiser for the village’s beautiful St Mary the Virgin church, the Open Garden Afternoon also features a raffle in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

In addition to many wonderful gardens, some terraced, some newly planted and others situated beside the idyllic waters of Broadmead Brook, there will be a photographic exhibition on the village’s history.

Other highlights include home made cream teas, an impressive plant sale, a village produce stall, an ice cream parlour and a lemonade stand. And there is plenty of free parking.
